Rooms
The Aldemar Royal Mare is a big resort with 345 rooms and 40 suites and has the feel of a village rather than a high rise hotel. All rooms are decorated in a Mediterranean/Cretan style with tiled floors, light walls and bright furnishings. The Garden & Sea View rooms are a a good size and have furnished balconies. The VIP sharing pool rooms have direct access to a pool shared by other rooms in your section (about 10 rooms) giving you the feeling that you are in your own little complex within the larger resort.Food
The Cretan diet is known to be amongst the healthiest in the world and there is no shortage of tasty dishes made with fresh local ingredients. The main restaurant, the Symposio has a casual feel of a large canteen serving a huge buffet selection and also menus of the day. Sit outside so you can get the fabulous views of the sea. The buffet will give you the choice of healthy dishes but you will need to apply some will power if you are watching your waistline as the delicious deserts are close by and available. If you want to keep away from these tempting treats, ask us about upgrading to the dietary nutrition meals which are calorie controlled and served at the smaller gourmet Candia restaurant closer to the beach. There are in total 6 restaurants and 4 bars so there is no shortage on choice.
Fitness and Daily Activities
Free Activities include acqua aerobics, outdoor stretching classes and pool volleyball during high season. You can also use the gym at the Thalasso Centre with some assistance from the instructors. The Aldemar has an impressive Tennis Centre with 11 courts and qualified instructors available for private tennis lessons at a cost. At the beach there is a watersports centre with windsurfing, water skiing, canoes and diving available.
Insider Tips
- Mineral water is supplied daily in your room free of charge.
- At about 6.30pm take yourself up to the Minos Bar for a juice and watch the sunset over the beautiful Mediterannean Sea

Thank you again for organising another well suited option!
The experience at the Aldemar Royal Mare Village was very different in nature from my Vilalara break in Portugal but quite a pleasant surprise. The size of Aldemar (390 rooms!) surprisingly did not hinder the experience of a calm and smooth get-away as the premises are well laid-out and offer space so that the compounds render a villagy feel without the touristy factory aspect (which Knossos Village next door conveys with a big central footpath avenue where all alleys converge to).
The room I was given was tailor-made to my request: away from the crowd and surelevated from the grounds with a balcony protected by a wonderfully lush vegetation. Quiet & calm which is ideal for a Thalasso break. The design of the room (as well as the main restaurant) is quite outdated compared to other 5* (such as Vilalara) but the service is excellent throughout.
The half board option is particularly befitting when one has a thalasso package as it allows the body to relax between the morning water treatments and the afternoon free activities (gym/sea/excursions) without putting the digestive system in overdrive through lunch. As a result the early dinner hour-slot 18:15-21:15 is ideal. The buffet is a very good option as there is a range of food for every taste - from a balanced Cretan diet to heavier 'Western' dishes.
The Spa was another nice surprise. It is 10 years old (younger than the resort) so very state-of-the-art. The main Aqua Pool was superior, the treatments done on Swiss clock time and at a high level of expertise by a friendly staff. The only negligence was the medical 'consultation' administered by a doctor who had been there way too long. The consultation started 25 mns late and lasted 5 mns and was so generic I could have done it myself. The Spa guests were predominantly Eastern Europeans with a majority of young Russians which happen to be repeat customers. As a result most of the therapists would speak Russian. Interesting to note.
I added a couple of treatments on the 6th open day which allowed the free access to the Sauna & Hammam during the whole week.
June is a great time to visit the Aldemar as this is not yet the high season and as a result the Village was not overcrowded. All in all the Aldemar was a very enjoyable stay. A very different crowd from the so elegantly designed and more intimate Vilalara in Portugal but then the Aldemar invites to a different social exposure. It is definitely a place to recommend off peak season - specially for Spa goers with high expectations as the Spa is excellent. The Aldemar might not be as chic as the Vilalara but it offers a type of experience which might be more accessible to Spa goers or young families with a more bohemian attitude to holidays.

The break was very good. Weather a little cooler than I had expected and hotel very empty but at least they kept up a high standard of food etc despite the small numbers. Evening entertainment not so good and not a place for mixing really. The spa was excellent and I would go back just for that. I think the cellulite package is a bit brutal though and there were other packages that looked good which I probably would have preferred for about the same money. I had been to the hotel a long time ago when it was very new - it barely looked any older - very well maintained and pleasant staff as well.
