Karkloof Spa
Karkloof Spa Details
Location
Opened in summer 2008, Karkloof is the first destination spa in Africa. If that isn’t exciting news enough, add to this the unique twist that you can not only unwind your body and mind with an extensive array of treatments, but also have at your doorstep a Safari experience - 'Spafari' at its best! You can awaken your senses and embrace nature in the surrounding 3500 hectare landscape that is teeming with wildlife. Situated 24km from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal midlands, the property is set in a verdant bowl, surrounded by towering cliffs with the shimmering water of the Albert Falls Dam in view.
Transfer Time - 20 minutes from Pietermaritzburg or 80 minutes from Durban
Rooms
This luxurious property has a spacious boutique Lodge which houses the main lounge and dining rooms, then connected to this by wooden walkways are the 16 individually decorated Villas. Not only are the rooms wonderfully comfortable and spacious, they have calming and elegant interior décor and the height of mod-cons with under floor heating to take the edge off any night chill and work areas with internet. You will find all the usual amenities of a deluxe hotel (bar fridge, a/c, sumptuous fluffy robe, espresso machine) but there aren’t many hotel rooms in the world where you have your own private game viewing deck, or can soak in an enormous bath with a view of the spectacular African sunsets.
Food
Personalised on every level, there are no fixed dining times at Karkloof, simply when it suits you. They can personalise the menu to suit your needs and wishes but generally the cuisine is based on healthy principles and uses fresh, organic (where possible) ingredients. The main dining room is in the lodge where the table are elegantly laid with white linen and crystal, however the atmosphere is very relaxed and you will find some of South Africa's renowned wines on offer. There is also the Greens and Teas Spa Cafe that serves fresh juices, therapeutic teas and light snacks.
Activities
This is a paradise for nature lovers and those that thrive in the outdoors. In addition to the heated pool for swimming, and the daily nature walk, you can mountain bike & hike around the property, picnic at the waterfalls, go fishing or simply observe the extraordinary wildlife and watch the 300 different species of birds.
Insider Tips
- You can tick off 2 of the 'Big 5' at Karkloof - and that could just be from the viewing platform in your room!
- Expect to see white & black rhino, Cape buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, waterbuck, nyala, eland, bush buck, warthog, bushpig and a range of monkeys - to name a few!
Holiday insider tips
Wellness Approach
- The approach is about combining nature at its most elemental form with a highly professional spa experience to achieve a state of ultimate relaxation. The therapists are exclusively from Thailand for that gentle and healing experience. A variety of massage, beauty and pampering treatments available.
Freestyle Spa
- Steam Room and Saunas in the spa and also separate male and female in the changing rooms. Two Kneipp plunge pools that are used for a combination of hot and cold to stimulate your circulation. An indoor large pool with jets and an outdoor jacuzzi. Beautiful relaxation room with great views over the valley.
Signature Treatment
Karkloof Intuitive Massage. An essential oil massage that is completely in tune with what your body's needs. The therapists use different techniques and pressures to deal with any individual stress areas. No two people get the same massage.
We Love
- The manicure/pedicure room with its comfortable lounge chairs and fantastic views of the wildlife, in fact all treatments rooms have views of the wildlife!
- The flotation treatment which is taken in the large flotation pool in its own private room, without a cover to avoid any claustrophobia.
Return on Investment
Rested and Tension free.
Holiday reviews and comments
2nd Jun 2010 | By Diana Kingsnorth
I had the most fantastic time at Karkloof, everything was just perfect. It was like stepping into another world where people knew what you wanted before you did and amazing places/people/animals/experiences were around every corner. I came back relaxed and refreshed and vowing to treat myself to a spa break a year if I can!
The other thing I felt was that it was excellent value, so much was included and the quality of the whole experience was outstanding.
Hopefully I'll be in touch early next year to plan my next spa holiday, I think it's a tradition worth starting!

Travelled December 08
A very quick note to you to say that Karkloof Spa, Wellness & Wildlife Retreat was amazing. It was just the holiday I needed and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone needing that mix of spa, good food and wine and also the safari.
When I arrived I was the only guest which was a bit scary and exhausting having travelled so far and everyone of the staff wanting to talk to me!
Next day I was joined by a fantastic couple with whom I ate dinner, did safaris and walks with. It got a little busier during the week but no more than 10 of us which was good for us, if not them.
The all-inclusiveness of the holiday was great - laundry, an open wine cellar which usefully Kris sorted out for us every evening, and nothing was too much trouble for them - batteries for camera, suntan lotion, without charge. We have some amazing thunderstorms in the evening/overnight - each time there was a hot water bottle in our beds!
I had underestimated the heat of the sun and got burnt and probably also should have taken another warm top, otherwise it was perfect - until yesterday, just before leaving, I slipped in the shower and broke my toe.
It all adds to the holiday photos! Seriously, I am fine just hobbling a little.
If any other clients of yours are going, I would recommend Pietermaritzburg airport which is a tiny, one in-one out airport but very convenient from Karkloof and ruling out the longer drive from Durban.
Otherwise the travelling was fine. Coming back to -4C at home was not fun!
So, thanks again. I am sure I will be in touch in the near future for another adventure!
