Red Magazine Spa Guide - Kamalaya, Koh Samui, Thailand
May 2009
Spa Special: Rewin, reboot, relax by Lisa Johson
Kamalaya, Koh Samui, Thailand by Mary Ann Sieghart
Most spas claim to make you feel well; Kamalaya actually delivers. The owner, Karina Stewart, is trained in both anthropology and Chinese medicine, and has a holistic approach to making her clients feel healthy and happy. This has trickled down to the staff, who make you feel nurtured, rather than just pampered.
The detox programme starts with a consultation and analysis, and takes a three pronged approach, combining yoga and meditation with diet and supplements, and treatments including colonic cleansing and Chi Nei Tsang (a Taoist abdominal massage). The food is astonishingly good- even non detoxers order it. The setting is gorgeous, with well designed rooms and villas built into a hillside that winds down to a private crescent beach, and two infinity pools that look if they have been hewn out of the rock. Lunch is eaten on platforms over the water, watching drangonflies settle on lotus leaves. The ambience is relaxed and relaxing - nobody cares what you wear – and the whole place exudes serenity.
BEST THING: The warmth of the staff.
WORST THING: The hot climb up the hill.
DETAILS: A seven-night Exclusive detox at Kamaly costs from £2100 per person sharing with Wellbeing Escapes (0845 602 6202; wellbeingescapes.co.uk), including return flights to Koh Samui via Bangkok(12hours) and transfers.
